This autumn, join Shishi-Iwa House on an immersive journey through the sacred mountains of central Japan, where fiery autumn foliage, volcanic landscapes, and ancient spiritual traditions converge. Designed for those who seek both physical challenge and inner renewal, this carefully curated retreat blends alpine trekking, Shinto philosophy, refined cuisine, and restorative onsen experiences—set against some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Japanese Alps .
Your journey begins in Karuizawa, with a warm welcome at Shishi-Iwa House—an architectural sanctuary designed for reflection and restraint. After settling in, guests are invited to an intimate introduction to Shinto beliefs and the spiritual significance of mountains in Japan, offering deeper meaning to the days of trekking ahead. Evenings unfold with thoughtful dining experiences, from local Italian cuisine in a restored Japanese home to handcrafted soba made from Shinshu buckwheat .
The heart of the retreat lies in the mountains. You will ascend Mt. Asama via the scenic Sainokawara route, passing forests, waterfalls, and volcanic terrain before reaching panoramic views of the region’s tallest active volcano. Later, the journey continues to Kamikochi—often called the soul of the Japanese Alps—where crystal rivers, sacred ponds, and dramatic peaks create an atmosphere of rare serenity. Here, gentle walks to Myojin Pond balance more demanding climbs, while a challenging ascent of Mt. Yakedake rewards perseverance with unforgettable alpine vistas at the height of autumn foliage .
Each day is complemented by moments of restoration: natural onsen bathing beside mountain rivers, optional shiatsu massage, and nights spent in a traditional ryokan where tatami rooms, futon bedding, and seasonal kaiseki-style meals reconnect you with a slower, more elemental rhythm of life. Back at Shishi-Iwa House, the journey culminates in a celebratory dinner at Shola, paired with rare Japanese wines and sake from Nagano—an expression of place, season, and craft .
