Togakushi Shrines, located in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, form a sacred complex known for their spiritual significance, natural beauty, and historical importance. The Togakushi Shrines have a long and rich history, with the origins dating back over 1,200 years. According to historical records, the Lower Shrine (Shimosha) is believed to have been established around the 8th century, during the Nara period (710-794). It is considered the starting point of the Togakushi pilgrimage route.

The shrines are spread across the Togakushi region and are associated with the ancient practices of Shugendo, a Japanese religion blending Shinto, Buddhism, and mountain worship. The shrines are dedicated to various deities, including Ame-no-Tachikarao-no-Mikoto (the deity of power), Ame-no-Yagokoro-Omoikane-no-Mikoto (the deity of wisdom), Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto (the deity of entertainment) and Ame-no-Uwaharu-no-Mikoto (the son of the deity Omoikane).

The walk between the shrines is a key part of the experience. Visitors first reach the Lower Shrine (Houkousha), the starting point of the pilgrimage, dedicated to Sarutahiko no Mikoto. From here, the walk continues to the Middle Shrine (Chusha), surrounded by a serene forest. The final destination, the Upper Shrine (Okusha), is located at an elevation of about 2 kilometres, requiring a 40-minute walk through a sacred forest of towering, ancient cedar trees, some over 400 years old. The path to Okusha is lined with these majestic trees, creating an awe-inspiring, spiritual atmosphere.

The entire journey, especially the approach to Okusha, offers a profound sense of connection to nature and the divine. The shrines are not only places of worship but are also linked to the Togakushi ninja tradition, enhancing their cultural depth and spiritual significance.
