A botanical workshop exploring what flowers when we stop performing

Spring Edition · 11–14 April 2027 (3N/4D)

Following a warmly received inaugural edition in autumn 2025, Hidden Landscapes returns to the quiet forests of Karuizawa for a second edition, this time in spring. Conceived by This Humid House, this intimate two-day botanical workshop explores the intrapersonal through the interpersonal, using plants and flowers as instruments for self-inquiry, embodied presence, and honest connection.

Spring is a season of beginnings. But before anything flowers, there is a tender, uncertain period of becoming. A time when growth is not yet visible, when possibilities are still taking shape, and when we must learn to trust what we cannot fully understand.

What might emerge if we allowed ourselves to be uncertain? If we loosened our grip on what we know, and took a chance on something new?

Hosted at the acclaimed Shishi-Iwa House, with architecture by Pritzker Prize-winning architects Shigeru Ban and Ryue Nishizawa, the workshop invites participants to slow down, suspend design, and attend to what is usually unseen.

Working with botanical materials responsibly foraged from the surrounding landscape, participants will move through a carefully considered progression of individual and collaborative exercises. Through touch, observation, silence, and shared making, we explore our responses to uncertainty, the tensions between intention and outcome, and the possibilities that emerge when we relinquish control.

Rather than striving towards a beautiful arrangement or finished work, we invite participants to develop an appetite for presence, curiosity, and the unfamiliar. To recognise that becoming is not about knowing what comes next, but finding the courage to begin without knowing.

Throughout the experience, guests will be immersed in the extraordinary hospitality of Shishi-Iwa House. Meals in rhythm with the season, sake tasting, nature walks, and unhurried conversations are woven into the programme, creating space for both reflection and restoration.

No prior floral experience is necessary. Only a willingness to arrive with care, curiosity, and courage.
